Successes
Coach Outing to Hastings - 20 July 2008
We left
right on time for our outing to Hastings and arrived there about
10.30am. The weather was dry and bright, but windy and
unfortunately not warm enough for a swim or a paddle in the
sea. However, there was plenty to do and see – my family
decided to go on the West Hill Lift, one of the steepest in
England, and the views once at the top were spectacular. From
there we went into the “Smugglers Adventure” and saw the history of
the St Clements Caves and the smuggling that went on.
After a picnic lunch, we had a game of
putting and a walk along the front. All too soon it was time
for home. An enjoyable day had by all. Jean

Bedfont & Feltham and Hanworth Carnivals
During the summer, Maureen, Vernon, Joy, Fred, Jean and
myself had a stall at two carnivals, one at Bedfont on 7 June and
the other at Hanworth on 5 July. Our stall consisted of three
games - Pick-a-lolly, Fishing game and Rebound. On both
occasions the weather was sunny and bright, and we were able to
raise some more money to add to our fundraising for the Salvation
Army (Charity No. 214779). The photograph is of Emily Carey
(Jean & John Carter’s granddaughter) who took part in the
Brownie parade dressed as Queen Elizabeth I. The Brownie pack
were winners in the competition. John

Clic Sargent Abseil
What a difference a day makes! Saturday 21 June
was damp, misty and overcast as our four volunteers from the Branch
arrived at Guy’s Hospital to run the check-in desk. The top
of the tower could not be seen as the first abseilers arrived about
10.00am. However by the time they had been through their
introduction, the sky had cleared and the rope hung down the 460ft
drop at the side of the tower. Some descending very slowly,
taking 20-25 minutes to reach the bottom. One action man came
down in about 5 minutes, more like a zip wire. It was a great
surprise to us all when a Cockerel and a Gorilla arrived to take up
the challenge, what great sports the two ladies were who did the
abseil in their costumes (see top photo). All in all the day
was a great success. (Bottom photo is of Vernon Elmes,
Branch President, with Jenny Webb from CLIC Sargent.)
On Sunday 22 June the sun
was shining as our four volunteers arrived to run the desk.
All the abseilers arrived ready to take the plunge, so to speak,
and it was just a matter of waiting for the right time.
However, although the sun was out it was blowing a gale and to
everyone’s great disappointment at about 12.30pm the organisers had
to cancel the event for safety reasons. It is hoped that the
event can be re-arranged, but it is very involved and time slots
are difficult to obtain, so it is doubtful. It was a very
disappointing outcome for everyone. Vernon Elmes
